Click Here to plan your trip to Skala Potamia

Skala Potamia is a very popular beach resort located almost 15 kilometres from Thassos Town and about 32 kilometres from Skala Prinos. The beach stretches along a bay on the Northeast side of the island that is surrounded by a spectacular chain of wooded mountains including Mount Ipsario, the tallest mountain on Thassos that soars 1204 meters, or 3950 feet above sea level.  The bay offers over two kilometres of sandy beach with few small areas of rock and pebbles. The overwhleming majority of Golden Beach is pure white sand, very fine and perfect for children to play and build sand castles with. The beach got its name from the color of the sand during the afternoon hours as the sun shines brightly on it, giving it a golden color. Golden Beach proudly flys two Blue Flags.

The southern half of Golden Beach is called "Chrissi Akti" by the locals. "Chryssi" in English translation means "golden". Walking from the South end of the beach northward, you will eventually reach the tourist resort town of Skala Panagia that occupies the hillside along the other end of Golden Beach, otherwise knows as "Chrissi Ammoudia".

Skala Potamia has a lot to offer its visitors. It offers a variety of restaurants, tavernas, snack bars, cafes, night clubs and souvenir shops along the beautiful coastline. There are also super markets, car rentals, motorcycle rentals and other shops and services that are very easy to find. The town has many years of experience serving its tourists and the people take good care of their guests. The port is a nice area to walk to and the views you can find are incredible. A perfect mix of mountains, sun and sea is what you will find here.

Development in recent years have increased greatly due to these attributes that make up Skala Potamia. It is one of the most popular resort towns on Thassos and it seems to become more popular every year that passes. It becomes very busy during the high season, from early July up until the end of August. Accommodations are difficult to find during the high season for those who do not plan their trip in advance. People have been seen sleeping in their own cars during the second week of August when the majority of Greeks enjoy to take their vacation at the same time. This is why it is very important nowadays to plan your trip weeks or months in advance.
Golden Beach, Thassos
Golden Beach has very fine sand

Unlike neighboring Skala Panagia, here you will find that even during the Winter months there are many people still living here. It is a quiet area most of the time and a place where many retired visitors to Thassos choose to build their retirement home, among other parts of Thassos like Skala Rachoni , Thassos Town, Kinira , Potos and Limenaria just to name a few. Real estate here, just as everywhere else in the Golden Beach area has seen a rapid rise in value recently. There is still no better time than today to buy your dream home or invest in land, since value and prices will only continue to rise, not just here but all over Thassos.

The fishermen's port in Skala Potamia
Skala Potamia is in a very strategic position for those tourists who would like to spend some of theirs days at the beach and other days exploring the ancient ruins and traditional villages such as Panagia and Theologos. Thassos Town is only about a 15-20 minute drive away and Alyki is about a 10-15 minute drive, or approximately 10 kilomtres away. The roads are good but curvy in the mountainous areas, so be cautious of sharp turns and try to take them slowly.

Independent is the way to go these days! You have so many choices this way and often you can find good deals and special offers depending on the time of year you holiday. Try it for a change, it's easy and you can choose a place that suits you perfectly. Most of the hotels in Thassos and especially Skala Potamia are on the internet nowadays anyway!

We are planning to go to Skala Potamia for I think it's the sixth time this year but I notice that Thomsons are only going to Susie's appartments. There is nothing wrong with Susie we have been there three times but we would like to stay somewhere else. Are there any other tour operators that go to SP or will we have to consider going independently?

Hi Simon,

Boy have things changed since 1993!

There is so much more now in the area than 17 years ago. Games, internet cafes, and water sports are just a few. There are also basketball courts in the area as well as beach volleyball nets on both ends of Golden Beach. The boys will have a great time.

Enjoy your Thassos holidays. smilies/smiley.gif

August 8 - 15 is absolutely the busiest time of the year no matter where you go in Greece. Expect a lot of traffic and crowded beaches because as you said all of the Greeks take their holidays all at the same time! Plus it's a popular time for tourists from elsewhere since August is normally the hottest month of the year. I suggest coming just a bit earlier or a bit later for a quieter and more relaxed experience. The earlier or later, the better!! smilies/smiley.gif
