Spring time is in full swing on beautiful Thassos Island and we are reminded that summer time is almost here as tourists are beginning to arrive onto our shores.
The winter period is a time for the natives and alike to reflect on the summer just past, and to relax in readiness for the season ahead. While the winter and autumn is a time of peace and tranquillity for some, the appearance of visitors to Thassos is a welcome sight for it brings new beginnings and an aura of activity all around us. The sun is shining and the sky is almost cloudless, so this makes us all happy straight away.
The island is bustling everywhere now as hoteliers are cutting their lawns and cleaning the accommodations as though there is no time to waste, which you will think is not like the Greeks at all! Siga, siga (slowly, slowly) is normally the way, and so it would be if only a bit of forward planning was put into place, but of course this is the Greek charm with everything left to the last minute...
Any how, it will all be ready on time and looking as splendid as ever for sure.
Soon the roads will be full of cars and the streets full of people enjoying their holidays unaware of how empty the places were only a few weeks before. Loud and animated conversation in many languages will soon be echoing from the tavernas as the excitement of the moment reaches fever pitch, in vast contrast to the emptiness that preceded the moment when the chairs were upturned and autumnal leaves laid on the floors.
Now the ferryboats are leisurely sailing to and fro via Limenas and Keramoti, but we all know how fast and furious the port becomes in the peak summer months as the ferry men diligently work out how to safely cram every last car, van, lorry and coach into it’s rightful place. The vast contrasts of events during the course of a year on Thassos Island are many and varied, but would we want it any other way? No, not at all!
It is always paradise here as those who know Thassos will always tell you! |
