With the help of our technician on the ground here on Thassos as well as Earthcam's tech support team, we managed to get the camera positioned to show a much more enjoyable view of our beautiful Golden Beach. The motor that controls the movement of the webcam got a heavy dose of electricity from a lightning strike on June 15 which apparently fried it... so we hope the current view will suffice until a permanent solution is found.

No can do, unfortunately. If we could we would have done this a long time ago. The camera is entirely mechanical and cannot be moved manually, only via the controls which are not working right now.

We're on it. Please continue being patient as we try to get this problem resolved...

At least you can try to point the camera manually towards the bay and Skala Potamia... it's a pity to have it there, but showing just grass and a little bit of blue water at the upper part of the image...

I think we need to take our sheers next week, the grass and bushes are nearly up to the camera lens!!

I run out of Metaxa and Ouzo, the nearest place where I can get a Mythos (and that is a big MAYBE) is almost 25Km away...I can't handle it, I need...I MUST SEE a Golden Beach view soon...or.....I'm definitely having Go-Thassos webcam withdrawal...and if I can't find Mythos....well....whiskey seems to be my last option.....

The Mouzakka, Greek Salad and large glass of wine for tea the other night didn't work to lift the depression, so we have made a trip to Morrison's and stocked up on the Mythos so that we can drown our sorrows at not being able to see our beloved Thassos on the webcam! Cheers everyone!!

May I suggest that someone leave that "comforting" tsipouro , take screwdriver, climb to the camera and point it (manually) to the Skala's bay, to cover some of the sea and some of the sky, PLEASE!

Returned after 1st visit to Thassos on 19 June 2011. Had a really good time. Stayed with Costas and Katerina at Smaragdi II, they are brilliant hosts, made all the difference to a gr8 holiday, such a friendly and welcoming couple. Thankyou both.
Had some really nice meals out, Vigli, Fedra and Finikas (think thats correct)just to name a few.
Didnt need any bars as spent late night with Costas and Katerina at the poolside bar. As descibed by lots of others, lots of different music and plenty of chatting!!! Also took part in the quiz night.... didnt do that well!!!!LOL

Will definately return to Thassos, Golden Beach and Smaragdi II, only question is when as there is still so many others places to go for a 1st time.

After many long hours on the phone with tech support at Earthcam, we've gotten the webcam feed back online! The only problem is that the camera's movement control software isn't responding and so we fear that something in the camera may have indeed been affected by the thunderstorm... it will take us some time to get to the bottom of this (can't even give an estimate) but trust that we are doing everything possible to get the webcam fully operational.

For those that are suffering from withdrawal symptoms we will have a 24-hour hotline made available and dedicated to you for emotional support. Don't do anything crazy now! Just try to bear with us and take some relief in knowing that Thassos is still here and is as beautiful as ever.

Updates will come as we have them. Thanks for being patient with us!

Serious withdrawal symptoms now setting in - may need to take medication - have prescribed one mouzzaka, one greek salad and large glass of wine or ouzo for tomorrow's tea! Hope you are soon up and running after the storm - sounds like you need to sort out the "flash" drive!

The lightning storm on June 15 damaged the hotel's phone lines and fried their internet router, which was then replaced over the weekend. As far as we can tell, the camera survived the storm but the settings must be re-set, which is what we are in the process of getting sorted.

Sorry for the delay, just fight the withdrawal symptoms with a glass of ouzo and a cold shower, as we continue working to get your favorite webcam up and running! We will keep you posted on any further developments.

We returned from a fantastic 10 days at golden beach at the emerald. had an amazing time, even the rain was amazing!!! Costas and Keterina at the Emerald are fantastic hosts, we don't normally return to the same place twice, but we are definately considering returning to thassos and the emerald. You have to see at least three beaches: Paradiso beach, Marble beach and Golden beach.
There are many others beaches on the island, but those are the most beautiful! Go to "You tube" and look for those beaches.... Good luck!

You don't need anything else to wear in the evning unless you plan to stay on the beach. Weather is quite perfect if you are in a town or village in the street, so no need for sweater or any other cloth except your t-shirt or dress.

have just returned from 2 weeks at nostos studios in golden beach . our 4th time there .everything was fantastic. studios, weather, people .ate at finekas.excellent food and prices. if you enjoy a greek salad, have a walk to THOMAI cafe bistro in scala potamia the one with the greek pillars at the front. Yiota and her husband are great and serve the best greek salad ever.

Golden Beach has a Cafe Bar under new management - Cafe Dolphin at Skala Panagia - next to Moto Rent - great breakfasts, snacks and drinks all day - come and see them soon. The Chef does excellent scrambled eggs and Donut Toast.

Hi Andy, I have stayed at smaragdi many times and it is great.It's about half an hour to walk along to skala potamia, which we do quite frequently.Costas at smaragdi is the best host. we are there in june also. enjoy your holiday.

Caroline, depends where you are staying, If Golden Beach then Vigli at the end of the road past the supermarket (small), or Finikas opposite the camping ground and the best bar is the Aegean.

my wife and i have been to thassos some 47 times and cant waite to get back we have driven to thassos twice from leicestershire uk golden beech we stay at the george most times ang the food at the fedra is just what you want after some long walks

We're working really hard to get the webcam back online as soon as possible! The issue is with the internet connection on site and we hope it will be resolved soon. We're very sorry for all the psychological problems this potentially may be causing, including but not limited to:

"Frozen-camera" anxiety,
"Can't see Thassos" depression,
"I miss Golden Beach" syndrome,
Red, itchy and/or teary eyes due to excessive crying,
Headache,
Nausea,
Stress,
Anger,
Shock,
and...
A feeling of insecurity for Thassos' well-being.

Look on the bright side though. You can now get a lot more work done at the office!

its about 150 meters from the beach of potos and near 5* alexandra hotel spa. potos is got all you need to relax. sun bed on the beach with cold drinks everyday from day to night and good restaurants. Also reccomend to visit panagia golden beach, the one in the camera, and psili ammos beach, if you have a car aliky beach is the solution.
however you choose you will be relaxed!!!

I'm glad I'm not the only one that sits gazing at a webcam for half an hour before I get up for work! I am also watching the weather warm up, watching the waves lapping on the shore and the puffs of cloud over the mountain,thinking "I will be there in 6 weeks!"

can't wait to explore, we are coming in early June. I have this webcam as a permanent bookmark on my laptop and am watching the weather begin to warm up.

You need to see this island when it is desolate, almost empty and windswept. I have and guess what? Its still beautiful!

We visited this beutiful island When i was 18 that was 30 years ago.We went with young world 18 t0 30s club.We went back when my youngest was 10.And keep going back.This is our 8th time.It feels like our second home.Roll on 31st July.

We have holidayed on the Greek islands about 20 times and enjoyed all (except one). We have only returned to the same place once before but enjoyed Golden Beach so much we are returning in August. There are accomodations like the Blue Bay with panoramic views of the beautiful bay and others on the flat area at beach level, good if you have walking problems.
Thank you to the Blue Bay for providing the webcam which reminds us of our great time on Thassos and of our many holidays on other island.

Beautiful weather for Independence Day!!

YEEEEEESSSSS, i spent my honeymoon at Golden Beach early July 2 years ago, so so so beautiful. On the last day thousands of butterflies (the ones which look like they have tails) took off to the mountains and flew over the beach. Was AMAZING!!! Well this year my husband a i are returning, along with our beautiful baby daughter and my 13 year old stepson (this will be his first time abroad). Cannot wait to introduce her to all of the friends we made there. I've visited many greek islands, this is the only one i've wanted to return too....Love you Thassos!!

We used to think this webcam was an invasion of privacy on our "away from it all" holiday in Thassos but now we can't get enough of it and leave it on whenever we are on the computer just to get a glimpse of our favourite place in the world, even when it's pitch black and you can only see the twinkling lights! Sad we know!

Each day, during my afternoon cofee, I turn on this site and looking this piece of haven.... Do you know that feel when you are on a ferry, with warm wind in your hair and with sound of sea-gull all around you...? And than, finally, you see the island!

I´ll probably go to the Thassos in july. Until then, I have a lot to work each day. But, in the hardest time of work I remember the Tassos and those 10 days at sea, and I feel perfect!!!

The cross was thrown into the sea and we had planned to broadcast it via the webcam as we have done annually ever since the webcam went online. Unfortunately, due to technical issues, this was not possible this year. Our humblest apologies for this.

I doubt that. There IS fish in the sea, it's true, but I don't remember that anyone near us ever catched anything larger than 5-10 cm. Non-vertebrae, mostly.

One night, last summer, one entusiastic family fisherman was violently occupied all of the Skala Panagia's pier/jetty, and whole place was full of rods, strings, warning lights, free roaming hooks... and when I asked his: "What's up?", he showed me small bucket with some water and two miniature creatures, which he proudly called "fish"!

Simply, Aegean fish don't want to be cought there. I'ts a RULE, not just my evil opservation.

Same situatuion is on most piers on island, especially Skala Sotiras, where fishermans bring big giros and sandwiches with them, knowing that will be only food that day to catch&consume. Luckily, there is few good restaurants on island, with fish menue, and all the markets on Thassos sell fishing accessories...

Looking at the webcam will get me thru the winter. Can't wait until end May 2011. Will be our 3rd visit to Smaragdi II and Golden Beach. Bring it on!!!

lorraine and i first stayed at Thassos in mid August 2010, both of us found the island, the people, the food, the peace and quiet,the beach was out of this world. We enjoyed ourselves so much that the day after our return we were in Thomsons rebooking the same holiday to Thassos. We are staying at a different studio this time but we cant wait to get back to our own piece of paradise.

yes i agree thassos fabulious.home in liverpool britain its been freezing since august.we always get rubbish summers and winters. Been coming for 3years now,and have now got apartment there at golden beach.Coming over november 13 cant wait.

Finally the beach looks great! I think that in the summertime there are far too many sunbeds and umbrellas....but for 22 years i am very much in love with Thassos.
A man from the island told me...It is magic!

it is soooooooooo sad!!!!!!!!!!

So, it appears that the last sunbeds and umbrellas have been packed away and so the beach and the rocks are left now to the walkers, fishermen, seagulls and of course the occasional seaweed! I shall still watch every day, all through the autumn and winter, counting the days till my next trip! The Golden Beach web cam is the BEST tonic to raise our spirits even through the winter months.

Brilliant!! Nearly October and people still swimming and sunbathing. Wish it were me. Thassos, we miss you !!

everytime i have a look at this wonderful bay, seeing the green to blue seawater, watching the boats (especially if perry is busy ), longing for a walk up to ipsarion - i can smell the pine-trees and the sea, feel the soft and warm breeze in my hair and the salt from drying seawater on my skin, i start hearing the clitter of the cicadas nestled in the sound of a far-away-radio playing rembetiko...

just the taste has more varieties: from frappe with bougatza in the morning times, beer and crisps in the late afternoon, to the "evening-taste" of malamatina and paidakia - or rather tsipouro with XTAPODI...

actually this always is a "minute-holiday": EVXARISTW PARA POLI!

Airplanes were in strike only 4 houres yesterday (15.07)

Don't mix private companies, hotels, etc with governamental institutes. They are in strike, not private sector.

Privelistea de la Emerald e superba, am stat anul trecut acolo. De la hotel pana la plaja faci la coborare cam 10 minute. La urcare faci probabil 15-20. Dar merita. Vacanta placuta si sa bei si pt noi un Mythos!

Unfortunately, I only speak english - however, I think you are asking how far the Emerald Hotel is from the sea - it's up a steep - so going to the beach isn't going to take you very long - 10 minutes or so - but coming back from the beach might take a little longer!! Have a great holiday.

We apologize for the technical difficulty. We've been having an issue with the camera-stop function for a few days and it was fixed temporarily but has recently stopped working again. We are doing our best to get it working as soon as possible so that you may once again watch your friends greet you from Thassos.

Why camera doesn´t stop every day at 12:00 & 18:00 showing my friend on Thassos?

The Emerald is at the top of a very steep hill. We have only walked it once and would not do it again unless you are super fit. We would recommend that you hire a car for the time you are there or you may find that the person with the difficulties will end up staying in the Emerald for the whole holiday.
The upside is, it is a really lovely view of the whole bay and surrounding area.

Always when booking check out on the Thomson site as this gives accurate information and comments made by other travellers.

Sorry to inform you of this situation, but it is better you know before you go.

Barney, the hill to the Emerald apts is a very steep hill. Say hello to Costas the owner from me. We have been going there for 10 years our next visit is August 22 2010 for 2 weeks. You wll just love the views out onto the Aegean sea and the well kept gardens at Emerald, the hospitality is second to none !

If you have some one with you who has a weak ankle i would suggest you hire a small car which you will find at the bottom of the hill. Potos Car Rental, Sue there is very fair with pricing dont book before hand do it when you get there. The longer you book you car the cheaper it will before you.

Hi Barney, the hill extremely steep if one of your party has health issues you would be advised to change your destination, you need turtle power to get up that hill.

The Emerald Apartments in Golden Beach are situated up a very steep hill! Not ideal for someone with walking difficulties. Our friends - who were in their late twenties - stayed there in June - and when it was very hot - they often stayed up at the apartments round the pool rather than walking down and back to the beach. Having said all that - the views from the apartments are amazing.

Can anyone tell me how steep is the hill is to the Emerald apartments? We are due out in two weeks and have a middle aged lady traveling with ankle and breathing problems.
