The cross was thrown into the sea and we had planned to broadcast it via the webcam as we have done annually ever since the webcam went online. Unfortunately, due to technical issues, this was not possible this year. Our humblest apologies for this.

I must take a moment to ask you all to keep in mind that due to the country's economic problems and the austerity measures taken by the government, this year will be a difficult one for the people of Thassos. I doubt that. There IS fish in the sea, it's true, but I don't remember that anyone near us ever catched anything larger than 5-10 cm. Non-vertebrae, mostly.

One night, last summer, one entusiastic family fisherman was violently occupied all of the Skala Panagia's pier/jetty, and whole place was full of rods, strings, warning lights, free roaming hooks... and when I asked his: "What's up?", he showed me small bucket with some water and two miniature creatures, which he proudly called "fish"!

Simply, Aegean fish don't want to be cought there. I'ts a RULE, not just my evil opservation.

Same situatuion is on most piers on island, especially Skala Sotiras, where fishermans bring big giros and sandwiches with them, knowing that will be only food that day to catch&consume. Luckily, there is few good restaurants on island, with fish menue, and all the markets on Thassos sell fishing accessories...

Looking at the webcam will get me thru the winter. Can't wait until end May 2011. Will be our 3rd visit to Smaragdi II and Golden Beach. Bring it on!!!

lorraine and i first stayed at Thassos in mid August 2010, both of us found the island, the people, the food, the peace and quiet,the beach was out of this world. We enjoyed ourselves so much that the day after our return we were in Thomsons rebooking the same holiday to Thassos. We are staying at a different studio this time but we cant wait to get back to our own piece of paradise.

yes i agree thassos fabulious.home in liverpool britain its been freezing since august.we always get rubbish summers and winters. Been coming for 3years now,and have now got apartment there at golden beach.Coming over november 13 cant wait.

Finally the beach looks great! I think that in the summertime there are far too many sunbeds and umbrellas....but for 22 years i am very much in love with Thassos.
A man from the island told me...It is magic!

it is soooooooooo sad!!!!!!!!!!

So, it appears that the last sunbeds and umbrellas have been packed away and so the beach and the rocks are left now to the walkers, fishermen, seagulls and of course the occasional seaweed! I shall still watch every day, all through the autumn and winter, counting the days till my next trip! The Golden Beach web cam is the BEST tonic to raise our spirits even through the winter months.

Brilliant!! Nearly October and people still swimming and sunbathing. Wish it were me. Thassos, we miss you !!

everytime i have a look at this wonderful bay, seeing the green to blue seawater, watching the boats (especially if perry is busy ), longing for a walk up to ipsarion - i can smell the pine-trees and the sea, feel the soft and warm breeze in my hair and the salt from drying seawater on my skin, i start hearing the clitter of the cicadas nestled in the sound of a far-away-radio playing rembetiko...

just the taste has more varieties: from frappe with bougatza in the morning times, beer and crisps in the late afternoon, to the "evening-taste" of malamatina and paidakia - or rather tsipouro with XTAPODI...

actually this always is a "minute-holiday": EVXARISTW PARA POLI!

Privelistea de la Emerald e superba, am stat anul trecut acolo. De la hotel pana la plaja faci la coborare cam 10 minute. La urcare faci probabil 15-20. Dar merita. Vacanta placuta si sa bei si pt noi un Mythos!

Unfortunately, I only speak english - however, I think you are asking how far the Emerald Hotel is from the sea - it's up a steep - so going to the beach isn't going to take you very long - 10 minutes or so - but coming back from the beach might take a little longer!! Have a great holiday.

Hi Barney, yes you can hire quad bikes - just down the road from 'the hill'!

We apologize for the technical difficulty. We've been having an issue with the camera-stop function for a few days and it was fixed temporarily but has recently stopped working again. We are doing our best to get it working as soon as possible so that you may once again watch your friends greet you from Thassos.

Why camera doesn´t stop every day at 12:00 & 18:00 showing my friend on Thassos?

The Emerald is at the top of a very steep hill. We have only walked it once and would not do it again unless you are super fit. We would recommend that you hire a car for the time you are there or you may find that the person with the difficulties will end up staying in the Emerald for the whole holiday.
The upside is, it is a really lovely view of the whole bay and surrounding area.

Always when booking check out on the Thomson site as this gives accurate information and comments made by other travellers.

Sorry to inform you of this situation, but it is better you know before you go.

Barney, the hill to the Emerald apts is a very steep hill. Say hello to Costas the owner from me. We have been going there for 10 years our next visit is August 22 2010 for 2 weeks. You wll just love the views out onto the Aegean sea and the well kept gardens at Emerald, the hospitality is second to none !

If you have some one with you who has a weak ankle i would suggest you hire a small car which you will find at the bottom of the hill. Potos Car Rental, Sue there is very fair with pricing dont book before hand do it when you get there. The longer you book you car the cheaper it will before you.

Hi Barney, the hill extremely steep if one of your party has health issues you would be advised to change your destination, you need turtle power to get up that hill.

The Emerald Apartments in Golden Beach are situated up a very steep hill! Not ideal for someone with walking difficulties. Our friends - who were in their late twenties - stayed there in June - and when it was very hot - they often stayed up at the apartments round the pool rather than walking down and back to the beach. Having said all that - the views from the apartments are amazing.

Can anyone tell me how steep is the hill is to the Emerald apartments? We are due out in two weeks and have a middle aged lady traveling with ankle and breathing problems.

Vratili smo se sa Tasosa pre par dana, prvi put smo bili tamo, supruga, klinac i ja. Bili smo smesteni u Limenasu, hotel Roula i utisci su fenomenalni pocev od smestaja, mora, lepote ostrva... Za sledecu godinu bar ne moramo da lupamo glavu gde cemo-pravac Tasos. Mermerna plaza je ostavila najjaci utisak, steta je samo sto je put do nje takav kakav jeste. Zavirili smo na svaku plazu, svako mesto i za 10 dana presli na ostrvu oko 500km. To je dovoljan dokaz svakome da je ostrvo cudesno lepo i da je steta ne obici ga u celosti.

Sotirija se nalazi na idealnom mestu, 50m od mora, 20m od supermarketa koji je odlicno snabdeven, 20m od pekare i dovoljno daleko od samog centra(do kog ti treba 5 min. hoda). Ja sam bila 2 x u Limenariji i mogu slobodno reci da je to mesto po meni najlepse na Tasosu. Dovoljno je veliko, ima sve atribute gradica a ipak je dovoljno malo. Ljudi tu zive/nije samo turisticko mesto..Ima mesta za izlaske, malih restorana..bar 5 potpuno razlicitih plaza. Najbolji giros...
Obavezno idi na krstarenje, to nemoj da propustis. Ako imas jos neko pitanje.. pozdrav

It has been one week since we left Thassos.....and we are already having symptoms of sea food withdrawal (how we miss that delicious Greek food)
We don't even want to think about that delectable Imiglikos or that cool glass of Mythos.....We get thirsty just by thinking about it.
The idea of eating sardines, tuna, octopus, and fish, etc. out of tin and/or frozen just does not sound right, seems sacrilegious after getting spoiled with the fresh bounty of the Northern Aegean Sea.
If you are in Thassos have a great time and enjoy the season, if you are getting ready to travel, the island is awaiting for you. If you are still undecided, do not worry Thassos will not disappoint you. Until the next time CIAO

.....sadly,but as the old proverb says "all good things must come to an end", and so is our beautiful stay in Thassos. The food, the view, and to a lesser extent the weather were simply marvelous ...maybe the next time the sun will smile at us more often. We have only one day left and we intend to savor it completely. Needless to say, we'll be back. Well....we have spent 2 weeks in Thassos with one week left to go ...., however, the planning for our return is already under way. So today was a bit wet (not from swimming, mind you ) but who cares... Guess what, it's 8:12 PM and the sun just showed up after a steady drizzle...I wish it was ouzo pouring from the sky, but I will have to settle for just good old plain water...oh, well!!!!!. For those of you contemplating visiting Thassos..well, come and visit, you won't be disappointed. Looking forward to a day around the island, with a stop in Alyki for a sunbath. BTW, the sun shinning over the red ferry at 8:15PM made us hungry...so off to eat and drink we go. Come and enjoy Thassos.

Places to visit? - for starters, visit Monastery of St. Michael. Ongoing, Limenas is the great place of interest, town of Limenaria is very prudent too... nd so i Panagia, Mt.Ipsarion, Skala Sotiras, Skala Maries...

Beaches - Aliki, Golden, Paradise, Stellakis, Marble beach...

Restaurants - Try food in Panagia, Limenaria, Skala Sotiras and Skala Rachnou... by my opinion.

Organized trips - you must choose by your pocket...

Markets - every town, village and port has it, bigger or smaller. There is no need to mark any specific place, since prices and quality of merchandise are very equal for most of the goods on sale there.

"Places for snorkeling" - ??? I suppose EVERYWHERE around the island, but south side is the best choice. I'm afraid of depths, but sea is clear as aquarium, and calm as a sweetwater lake.

Hallo, Alex! Its too much for writing all the wunderful things of thassos.
You have to search with the word: thassos - and you will find on google some websites
where you can read or ask or look, what you want to know.

All the places on thassos are great. If you have time enough, look around the island.
On this site with the webcam you are looking at the most beautiful beach of thassos. You will find here some big and small hotels and little fine tavern. The water around the island is wonderful and clear. But also the villages in the mountains are very nice and they have phantastic typical food.
Enjoy yourself at the most wonderful island of greece.

Have to agree with Tania,we stayed in Golden Beach last year,and our favourite place to eat was the Playa de Ora.We will be eating there when we return in 8 days time

Mel, don't bother on Skala Panagia, go to the hill, to Panagia.

At the center of the village there is a restaurant with local food, under the great planetree. That's the place.

Average lunch for one person (with few drinks) is about 10 €, maybe little more.

I normally don't recommend anything similar to others, but I saw that's the place where even continental Greeks come to eat, and they bring thir families with them.

I think that is enough.

Hi, It was our first time at Golden Beach last year, had a fab time, we loved to eat at Playa de Oro which is on the corner opposite the campsite. Fantastic food and very friendly staff. We are going out this year on the 11th May staying at Skala Prinou this year.

Be out there on the 16th, can't wait it is our first time! Any hints on the best place to eat in Golden Beach?

We have already booked and will be on the island on the first flight out - Sunday 2nd May along with four of our friends from Leicester. Thanks for the heartfelt comment. It is sad that Greece is going through these problems. Times will be hard economically, but there will be a day when the situation is behind us and things are better.

The best thing you can do for Greece...or Thassos...,for that matter, is visit. The tourism economy is one of the sectors that will help keep Greece afloat throughout this mess. There's no need to be confused or uncertain about visiting Thassos. Despite what the media may have you think, the entire country is not rioting, protesting, etc. Thassos is not having any violent acts or experiencing any forms of unrest. Thassians are worried about the uncertainty that this summer season may bring, and if people don't visit, then Thassos will have major economic problems.

If you love visiting Thassos, the best thing you can do is come this summer.

It's a very sad situation in Greece today, regarding economic and social problems, civil unrests, protests and all that stuff.

My heart is with Greek people, and I hate to see some countries in EU insulting your beautiful land, history and people. I hope you will stand the fight!

Gazing wistfully for hours at the gorgeous but unchanging scene on the Thassos webcam, Sir PJ came to the jolting revelation that something indeed was wrong with this picture. Scrambling onto his Trusty Steed Vauxhall, he rode in record time down to Golden Beach to investigate for himself. Upon arriving, he found a contingent from Go-Thassos.Gr sadly shaking their heads while gazing at some alien appearing machinery surrounding their webcam. “What is this?” he inquired of the contingent. “There appears to be some odd equipment redirecting our camera feed” replied one identifying himself as Webmaster. Sir PJ drew himself up righteously and exclaimed, “I shall get to the bottom of this!” Webmaster shook his head and said, “Considering the webcam and that machinery are at the top of a tall pole, I think it would be more appropriate if you got to the top of matters”. Sir PJ shrugged and approached and inspected the alien equipment. He then grinned. (everyone grins in these dumb stories) “Why I recognize that! It is a signal redirect placed there by alien walk-ins from Sedona. They must have some UFOs lurking in space and are enjoying the beauty of Golden Beach while denying the rest of us that pleasure”. Extracting his model ZKR28q Super Duper Contractors Framing Hammer, he quickly scooted up the pole and smashed the alien equipment. Moments later the Thassos webcam was back on-line. Everyone grinned. (see, I told you everyone grins in these dumb stories)

Indeed, the weather has not been very helpful for the past couple of days! Bear with us though, we are doing our best to keep you constantly connected with Thassos.

For those of you who missed the opportunity to watch the Feast of Theophany's throwing of the cross live in Golden Beach, Thassos, we took a few pictures of the event with the webcam so that we can share them with you. Due to the high waves, the boys didn't jump into the water off the pier. They ran into the water from the beach. Hopefully next year they will be able to do it from the pier so that we will have a better view

Zivot na Thasosu u jesenjim mesecima je prilicno mrtav a u zimskim totalno. Bar tako kazu mestani. Deca idu u skolu, radi po neka prodavnica i toliko.
Gostiju ima malo oko Nove godine i to uglavnom rumuna i bugara. Hladno je i pada kisa i sneg isto kao kod nas u Srbiji, mada nije toliko hladno.
I mi mastamo o tome da kupimo neku kucicu(doduse u Limenariji) i zauvek tu ostanemo .

I'm curious... what's life in Skala Panagia, or on Thassos... in late autumn/winter?

I imagine that everything is mostly closed, streets are half-empty, leaves flying carried by the strong sea (mountain) winds...

If I'm right, It's my paradise place for resting and spending quiet life by the sea. I mean, in June/July Thassos was great, but this part of the year is dullest in Serbia/continent, and I want to be there, on that little pier...

We just came this morning from Thassos, Skala Panagia, Vila Soti. Webmaster, thanks... you told me only the truth!

It's a life worthy, most beautiful experience in my (touristic) life, starting from beach, air, sky, honey, wine, tsipuro, and moving to food, plants, views, roads, churches, apartments, villages... and most of all... there are some nice greek people, which is not very much language skilled (God bless you!), but all of them very kind, polite, culture and frindly.

Many greetings to "Lullaby Beach Net Cafe" in Skala Panagia, especially to Ilija and Đorđe (Illios, Jorgos... and miss Beatrice too)! Love you, my friends!

Also, many thanks to (National) friend Antonis from Limenaria... for a great little car rent and all of support!

Oh dear, where has the sunshine gone???? It hasn't looked nice for the last couple of days now and I don't think the forecast for the next few days is good either.

yes golden beach is suitable for young children,it doesn't get too windy generally and the sea is normally quite calm,sometimes a bit rougher but nothing too much.as for nightlife it isn't a problem.there are no wild bars or clubs.this is a calm and relaxing resort.hope you enjoy your visit.

Does it get very windy like most of the nothern aegean islands? Are the waters still or are there waves? and last, how is the nightlife there?

Hi Nicki just returned from Thassos Golden Beach/Scala potomia. Prices are not to bad. a meal for three including Wine around about thirty to thirty five euros depends where you eat. The restraunts are very good i can reconmend Phillipi,krambusa,Trata,Alcioni Which are all at Scala potamia on the beach front.
Scala Potomia and Golden beach all run into one. Scala is a bit more livier of a night. Enjoy your holiday

Hi. We have just returned from our first visit to Thasos, we stayed at the Anastasia apartments on Golden Beach and it was a brilliant holiday. The island is very beautiful, the people are extreemly friendly, the food is wonderful I recomend PEFKA resterant under the pine trees and the weather is perfect we had 30'+.There is a lot of talk about wasps on the island but we only saw 2 and they went away when asked to. The web cam is great our family could see us as we waved and spoke on the mobile. All in we had a wonderful time and will return some day. Keep up the good work Webmaster.

Can anyone who has been to Golden Beach very recently tell me what the prices are like for drinking and eating out - getting told very different varieties of prices!!!!

Many thanks again to anyone who can help.

1) I see on cmaera people on sunbeds and under umbrellas at the middle of the beach in Skala Panagia. Are there for free or for renting? And what's the price?

Answer: All of the umbrellas and sunbeds you see on the beach come with some sort of cost. You either pay for using the sunbed/umbrella directly, get it free with the purchase of a drink from a nearby cafe/bar, or get it free as being a guest at a nearby hotel. The price for two sunbeds and an umbrella can cost anywhere between 5 to 7 euros. It really depends on where you go. You will have to hunt around for the cheapest offer.

2) I'm carrying my own umbrella, is there any limitations for them?

Answer: Probably at this point, the only limitation you will have is finding space to put your own. This year almost the entire stretch of Golden Beach is covered with sunbeds and umbrellas leaving little space for your own. Normally you will find a place to put your own things (assuming it's not high season and is not completely crowded), but if you don't you're not obligated to use the sunbeds that are there. When we go and there's no space, we simply move what's in our way. Beaches in Greece are public property.

3) Are there places/parts of the beach that are not free, but only for ones that pay some ticket?

Answer: Golden Beach is public property and nobody owns it. You can go to any part that you wish. The only beach that you would have to pay to access is Makryammos Beach simply because the property of the resort completely surrounds the beach. The only way to get to it is to cross their land. If you have a boat and came in by way of the sea, you wouldn't have to pay a penny.

One or two questions:

I am back from Thassos after a dream week... I am happy I stayed on this wonderful island and extremely sad I had to go... Nice beaches with white fine sand, great scenery, tasty food... The cookies are the best I have ever eaten (check the panetteria in the center of Limanas)... I had a tour of the island and visited almost all the beaches, I even climbed on Ypsario and the view is quite amazing...
I stayed at Hotel Angelika in Limenas. It is a nice hotel with a great view to the old harbour. On the other hand the bathroom is a bit too small but in the end we got used to it.
I am sure I will be back some day so See you soon, Thassos!

we have been doing the journey from thessaloniki to thassos for the last 5 years since thompson stopped going to the achillion.we have found the journey is getting shorter with the new motorway extending each year the best place to catch the ferry is at keramoti even though its about 25mins longer drive there are more ferrys running than kavala and the ferry trip is shorter when you come out of the airport you need to get on the ring road around thessaloniki town and follow that anticlockwise to juction 5 the road signs say kavala and are in english aswell as greek follow the signs for kavala once you pass the turn off for kavala town you keep going until the turn for keramoti appears. we bought a road map from whsmith the first time and we have been using it ever since it is the macedonia part of greece raod map if it helps the isbn is 960848118x. we will be gong on 31st july have a good time

derek my friend you cant go wrong just take the new motor way egnatia and it will take you straight to keramoti in just 1:45m depending traffic. I've done last year its great drive. see you maybe theire!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We usualy fly to Kavala but Thompson are getting to expensive, over £300 each.
BA to Thessalonika £108 each.Even with car hire still works out cheeper.We are staying at the Semeli studios,looking forward to a nice cool beer in the garden bar when we get there.

Hi All, Great webcam - makes me want to be there right now! I have been to Thassos twice, once in 1982 and again in 1984 with Young World (don't think they exist anymore)._ I love Thassos because it is not only beautiful but friendly too - felt like home away from home! Can't wait to go back at some point. Want to see how much it has changed since my last visit. I loved every part that I visited on the Island and Golden Beach is stunning! Of all the places I have been, Thassos is the place I will keep returning to - it really is special. My sister is going this year and I am really jealous, but she has promised to take lots of pictures for me! Wonder if she will love it as much as I do?

Hi, I love the webcam, looks lovely and hot there today. I'm coming to Thassos June 28th, staying at Aberdeen Studios, does anyone know what they're like? I last came to Thassos in 1996 with my mum, it was a great week. Can't wait to see the island again.

I find it far too busy these days as with a lot of beaches on Thassos now. Probably due to too many hotels being build. How I loved it when you could find a desreted beach with no restaurants and Katina's. Wonderful but gone are those days sadly. I just wish the tourist would not litter the island with their rubbish. Keep Thassos clean and take your rubbish back with you or at least put it in a bin provided.
