Indeed, the weather has not been very helpful for the past couple of days! Bear with us though, we are doing our best to keep you constantly connected with Thassos.

For those of you who missed the opportunity to watch the Feast of Theophany's throwing of the cross live in Golden Beach, Thassos, we took a few pictures of the event with the webcam so that we can share them with you. Due to the high waves, the boys didn't jump into the water off the pier. They ran into the water from the beach. Hopefully next year they will be able to do it from the pier so that we will have a better view

Zivot na Thasosu u jesenjim mesecima je prilicno mrtav a u zimskim totalno. Bar tako kazu mestani. Deca idu u skolu, radi po neka prodavnica i toliko.
Gostiju ima malo oko Nove godine i to uglavnom rumuna i bugara. Hladno je i pada kisa i sneg isto kao kod nas u Srbiji, mada nije toliko hladno.
I mi mastamo o tome da kupimo neku kucicu(doduse u Limenariji) i zauvek tu ostanemo .

I'm curious... what's life in Skala Panagia, or on Thassos... in late autumn/winter?

I imagine that everything is mostly closed, streets are half-empty, leaves flying carried by the strong sea (mountain) winds...

If I'm right, It's my paradise place for resting and spending quiet life by the sea. I mean, in June/July Thassos was great, but this part of the year is dullest in Serbia/continent, and I want to be there, on that little pier...

We just came this morning from Thassos, Skala Panagia, Vila Soti. Webmaster, thanks... you told me only the truth!

It's a life worthy, most beautiful experience in my (touristic) life, starting from beach, air, sky, honey, wine, tsipuro, and moving to food, plants, views, roads, churches, apartments, villages... and most of all... there are some nice greek people, which is not very much language skilled (God bless you!), but all of them very kind, polite, culture and frindly.

Many greetings to "Lullaby Beach Net Cafe" in Skala Panagia, especially to Ilija and Đorđe (Illios, Jorgos... and miss Beatrice too)! Love you, my friends!

Also, many thanks to (National) friend Antonis from Limenaria... for a great little car rent and all of support!

yes golden beach is suitable for young children,it doesn't get too windy generally and the sea is normally quite calm,sometimes a bit rougher but nothing too much.as for nightlife it isn't a problem.there are no wild bars or clubs.this is a calm and relaxing resort.hope you enjoy your visit.

Hello to all. I'm planning on visiting thassos for the first time this summer and i'v got a couple of questions about golden beach. Is it suitible for small chilren? Does it get very windy like most of the nothern aegean islands? Are the waters still or are there waves? and last, how is the nightlife there?

Hi Nicki just returned from Thassos Golden Beach/Scala potomia. Prices are not to bad. a meal for three including Wine around about thirty to thirty five euros depends where you eat. The restraunts are very good i can reconmend Phillipi,krambusa,Trata,Alcioni Which are all at Scala potamia on the beach front.
Scala Potomia and Golden beach all run into one. Scala is a bit more livier of a night. Enjoy your holiday

Hi. We have just returned from our first visit to Thasos, we stayed at the Anastasia apartments on Golden Beach and it was a brilliant holiday. The island is very beautiful, the people are extreemly friendly, the food is wonderful I recomend PEFKA resterant under the pine trees and the weather is perfect we had 30'+.There is a lot of talk about wasps on the island but we only saw 2 and they went away when asked to. The web cam is great our family could see us as we waved and spoke on the mobile. All in we had a wonderful time and will return some day. Keep up the good work Webmaster.

Can anyone who has been to Golden Beach very recently tell me what the prices are like for drinking and eating out - getting told very different varieties of prices!!!!

Many thanks again to anyone who can help.

1) I see on cmaera people on sunbeds and under umbrellas at the middle of the beach in Skala Panagia. Are there for free or for renting? And what's the price?

Answer: All of the umbrellas and sunbeds you see on the beach come with some sort of cost. You either pay for using the sunbed/umbrella directly, get it free with the purchase of a drink from a nearby cafe/bar, or get it free as being a guest at a nearby hotel. The price for two sunbeds and an umbrella can cost anywhere between 5 to 7 euros. It really depends on where you go. You will have to hunt around for the cheapest offer.

2) I'm carrying my own umbrella, is there any limitations for them?

Answer: Probably at this point, the only limitation you will have is finding space to put your own. This year almost the entire stretch of Golden Beach is covered with sunbeds and umbrellas leaving little space for your own. Normally you will find a place to put your own things (assuming it's not high season and is not completely crowded), but if you don't you're not obligated to use the sunbeds that are there. When we go and there's no space, we simply move what's in our way. Beaches in Greece are public property.

3) Are there places/parts of the beach that are not free, but only for ones that pay some ticket?

Answer: Golden Beach is public property and nobody owns it. You can go to any part that you wish. The only beach that you would have to pay to access is Makryammos Beach simply because the property of the resort completely surrounds the beach. The only way to get to it is to cross their land. If you have a boat and came in by way of the sea, you wouldn't have to pay a penny.

One or two questions:

I am back from Thassos after a dream week... I am happy I stayed on this wonderful island and extremely sad I had to go... Nice beaches with white fine sand, great scenery, tasty food... The cookies are the best I have ever eaten (check the panetteria in the center of Limanas)... I had a tour of the island and visited almost all the beaches, I even climbed on Ypsario and the view is quite amazing...
I stayed at Hotel Angelika in Limenas. It is a nice hotel with a great view to the old harbour. On the other hand the bathroom is a bit too small but in the end we got used to it.
I am sure I will be back some day so See you soon, Thassos!

we have been doing the journey from thessaloniki to thassos for the last 5 years since thompson stopped going to the achillion.we have found the journey is getting shorter with the new motorway extending each year the best place to catch the ferry is at keramoti even though its about 25mins longer drive there are more ferrys running than kavala and the ferry trip is shorter when you come out of the airport you need to get on the ring road around thessaloniki town and follow that anticlockwise to juction 5 the road signs say kavala and are in english aswell as greek follow the signs for kavala once you pass the turn off for kavala town you keep going until the turn for keramoti appears. we bought a road map from whsmith the first time and we have been using it ever since it is the macedonia part of greece raod map if it helps the isbn is 960848118x. we will be gong on 31st july have a good time

We usualy fly to Kavala but Thompson are getting to expensive, over £300 each.
BA to Thessalonika £108 each.Even with car hire still works out cheeper.We are staying at the Semeli studios,looking forward to a nice cool beer in the garden bar when we get there.

Hi All, Great webcam - makes me want to be there right now! I have been to Thassos twice, once in 1982 and again in 1984 with Young World (don't think they exist anymore)._ I love Thassos because it is not only beautiful but friendly too - felt like home away from home! Can't wait to go back at some point. Want to see how much it has changed since my last visit. I loved every part that I visited on the Island and Golden Beach is stunning! Of all the places I have been, Thassos is the place I will keep returning to - it really is special. My sister is going this year and I am really jealous, but she has promised to take lots of pictures for me! Wonder if she will love it as much as I do?

I find it far too busy these days as with a lot of beaches on Thassos now. Probably due to too many hotels being build. How I loved it when you could find a desreted beach with no restaurants and Katina's. Wonderful but gone are those days sadly. I just wish the tourist would not litter the island with their rubbish. Keep Thassos clean and take your rubbish back with you or at least put it in a bin provided.

4. the prices that are mentioned here are NOT the ones from the cafenions e.g. up in potamia or panagia village. i just tried to recommend the experience of having a "ouzo-meze" in a greek café. if you do: ask for the home-made ouzo!

5. sorry, couldn´t know about your health-condition. i recommended to take the trip by foot, because many people don´t even know - and don´t think - that it is possible. but there is a footpath from panagia as well as from potamia. and the tour through the woods and the mountains is wonderful!

6. i just didn´t know the prices.

enjoy your holidays and try to take a breath of the non-touristic part of thassos! - you´ll love it even more then

The temperatures have dropped a bit because of a cool front pushing south from the Balkans. The water is still a bit cool, but it is perfectly fine for swimming. I've been in the sea a few times already and it is ok. I'm sure the many other people that are out in the water already would say the same. With a clear day and warm sun, it's great

3. I should use different term, thanks. I Just want to check which Greek provider has better roaming contract with my here.

4. I'm not drinking alcohol in the caffes, it's too expensive, as I see from posts here. Plus, I want to buy some presents for my people here, and Metaxa (with old Serbian king's herald!) is always a good preset here in Serbia.

HI Nicki returned from skala panagia on sunday boo hoo !Weather was glorious sea was a much needed cooler (quite a few jelly fish) but the waters so clear they are easy to spot.As for the mariner rooms are very basic but adequate for the needs of myself and daughter.We had a ground floor room only draw back was we only got the sun in the morning.The gardens are very nice .Over the road is the pool which we did not use and they serve food and drink.Yet again we only had one drink there as I felt it more expensive.If you cut through the camp to the beach turn right and use the sun beds that are cream with cream sunshades as they are only 5 euros for the day ,the rest all charge 7!.I would recommend fedras restaurant as they are reasonably priced.have a good trip the island is stunning,

Enjoy your time there and don´t even try to plan too much. You go to greece and to really enjoy it there you should be flexible.

Answer: We usually look at this website for temperatures http://www.meteo.gr/cf.asp?city_id=71 (What we've noticed is that the temperatures are taken from the airport in Kavala which isn't too far away. We don't have a weather station on Thassos. It is accurate enough though.) Water temperatures are still warming up right now. It's a bit chilly when you get in, but you'll quickly get used to it. With the hot sun, you'll be perfectly fine in the water.

2. Is there any internet cafe in Skala Panagia? Or Net-club? Anything?

Answer: There is an internet cafe in Skala Panagia. You'll find it along the waterfront. I don't know much about prices.

3. Which mobile provider is dominant in that area of Greece?

Answer: Mobile providers for this area are Vodafone, Wind, Cosmote.

4. What is the price of Ouzo or Metaxa in the supermarkets? smilies/tongue.gif

Answer: These are approximate prices. Many stores vary in price.

5. Can I get to top of the Ipsarion mountain by my (rented) car?

Answer: You will need a car with 4 wheel drive like a Jimny or other type of jeep. It is possible to get up there with a regular car, but it will be a rough trip. We managed to pop a tire in our regular car. There are many rocks on the road closer to the peak.

6. What's the price of gasoline on the island?

Answer: Gas on the island really depends on which gas station you go to. We are getting our gas anywhere between .90 and 1.04 euros per liter. As I said, it depends on the station and area.

Few questions for experienced "Thassosmaniacs" , and for the Webmaster:

1. Where I can get CURRENT temperatures of the air and more important, of SEA for Skala Panagia, or Thassos at least.

2. Is there any internet cafe in Skala Panagia? Or Net-club? Anything?

3. Which mobile provider is dominant in that area of Greece?

4. What is the price of Ouzo or Metaxa in the supermarkets?

5. Can I get to top of the Ipsarion mountain by my (rented) car?

6. What's the price of gasoline on the island?

Hi Chris...Nobody will be able to give you a definite answer on the wasps. Some years they aren't around, some years they can be annoying. This year and last year they haven't been problems. I can't speak for the entire island as they may be buzzing around in different areas. It all depends on the weather and the location. Some people will make the wasp issue into something that will make or break the experience. We don't have swarms of wasps chasing people.

Hi. We are staying at Anastasia Studios Golden Beach from 7th June and I have heard that there is a big wasp problem on the island. Has any one come across this and is it really a problem.

Food prices very reasonable. For a starter, main, a carafe of wine (cake and coffee, usually thrown in free) looking approx 30 euros.

Local beer Mythos very nice approx 2.50 euro but spirits are very expensive (we had two bacardi & coke at a beach bar and cost 14 euros - Ouuch!!)

In Villa Elia the drink prices are pretty much the same as bars in town as is the snack menu.

hi olga,I have been to emerald many times and yes there is a hill but you soon get used to it.The hill won't matter as Costas the owner is a great host and makes the hill walk worthwhile.The views,peace and tranquility of Emerald more than compensate.I am returning there in july and can't wait.have a great holiday on Thassos.

Hi everyone just got back from thassos town what can i say, good food, good weather and a goodtime.Stopped at the Villa Elia. Costa was the perfect host and his wife Elpi cooks a mean breakfast and the place is spotlessly clean.

Me and my Sam are also stopping at the Hotel Mediterranean we go this sunday!!! Cannot wait to just spend 2 weeks with her D if we get chance we will inform what it is like within the first week so poeple can check it out our comments here

Diana: You are Romanian, right? then you know about Ţuică? While ouzo is great, and to my taste, refined....Tsipouro is.......homemade, earthy, it makes you appreciate the Thassian hospitality even more....and it carries quite a punch. Enjoy Thassos.

"Tsipouro" is different from ouzo?
I visited Greece last year, on a tour across the most important places and I loved it: Athos, Salonic, Meteora, Corfu, Athens, Paralia ... Now I decided to spend some time in Thassos. I can hardly wait.
I will come to Limenas on June 4th and I will stay at hotel Angelika. I heard the location is good and it has some great views. Do you happen to know anything more about it?

I can't wait to come back to Thassos in July now. It must be one of the best places to visit in the whole world! i love this web cam too. My favorate place is Limenas and my favorite beach is Makryammos. The best restaurant by far is Thassian Restaurant in Thassos town - the food there and atomosphere were brilliant and it was not at all expensive. We can't wait to see all our friends in Thassos again.

Diana, I forgot to mention another great place to dine...Thassian Restaurant (downtown Limenas by the seafront). On the day I went there, a local? musician was playing live music, which made the entire evening even better....don't forget to try the local thassian water "tsipouro"

Diana: There are so many great places to eat. On my last trip I was afraid of gaining too much weight, so I limited my "epicurean" experiences to just a few places, they all turned out to be just great, I remember a Taverna Lambiris in the town of Theologos.
Alexander: I thought Mouses had reasonable prices; the food was plentiful and simply delicious....

Alexander: I was there last year at about the same time. The water temperature was about right, not quite warm, but certainly not cold. Just get in...JUMP IN!!!! and you won't feel it. Once in the water, you'll enjoy it. Btw, once done with swimming stop by what I think is a great restaurant in Limenas, Taverna Mouses.

We love this island so much, we have booked two weeks in June and another two weeks in September. We will be staying at the Hotel Blue Bay...where the webcamera is situated...so you can imagine the views we will be waking up to. Can't wait! Thassos is most definitely the jewel in the Greek crown.

Thassos touches my heart deeply, I would like to return there. Us Slovaks love Thassos....

What a pity. You changed the view of Kramboussa. My opinion, the first farest view was very nice, because you saw the whole sea, where moving all the fisherman's boats and the steamer outside and the main point: the sunlight all around the water.

We went to Thassos summer 2008 and loved every second of the holiday. We are hoping to get married there this year. Still need to find out how?? Anybody with any info, greatly appreciated.

Of course you can. You'd have an amazing view from the top of Ipsario (1200 meters). On a clear, cold day, you can see so far out. Looking south, you'd see our neighboring islands which you wouldn't normally see.

Amazing snow capped mountains. Great view! You guys have really done a great job at promoting Thassos. Can you take hikes into the mountains this time of year?

We managed to grab two stills from the webcam feed of the event. Due to the high waves, they didn't jump into the water off the pier. They ran into the water from the beach. Hopefully next year there will be a better view

I spent holyday 3 times on Thasos. Did anybody visit mr. antiquary in Panagia? excellent guy!
The sunset on west side of Thasos at Skala Marion is great.....

There's no bowling alley anywhere on Thassos. The comment was in reference to bowling on the Nintendo Wii. Would be nice to have a real one though

Hi everybody ! I was in Thassos at the beginning of September and I spent the honeymoon there... It's such a restful place.. It really feels like home.. The hotel was great, Esperides, near Limenas and the most beautiful beach I think is Paradise beach, along with others too, but this one is special ! We had great time and we'll be back there for sure! Seeing images of Golden Beach, I feel like reliveing the moments spent there...

Wow... the memories.... this year I've been twice in Thassos... and I'd go again. It was wonderful, and I felt so relaxed, at ease and conforted like in no other holiday destination. This island is cosy like home.
